Homeowners Risk A Lot without Water Absorbent Materials

By Angie Meza

Water, as we know, has this amazing ability to permeate through any surface at any time. Don't worry if you haven't noticed this condition as a homeowner as yet, because it's only a matter of time before you will. When the ground around our home becomes more and more saturated during the rainy season, the water table rises and rises. You will soon notice this and when you enter your basement next, the unmistakable smell of dampness fills the air.

When water is moving along nicely, we find it very pleasant to look at and interact with. Think how much time we spend on the beach, on the river or on the lake. However, we don't want to see standing water inside our homes and this problem can lead almost immediately to the formation of mildew and mold.

As it is very difficult to stop water permeating into our basement when conditions are very wet outside, we need to look for water absorbent materials to help us mop it all up before it becomes a problem. The humidity in this room is rather high as it is and the basement is always poorly ventilated. As a consequence, it is a ripe breeding ground for these conditions.

Identify all the areas in your basement that are problematic and find products made of water absorbent materials to help. Then, the water will be soaked up automatically and as long as you keep your eye on the problem, you can deal with it. Periodically, wring the product out into a drain and air dry it, before putting it back to continue its work.

Without attending to mold and mildew, serious problems can arise. After a while the room will become unusable for any other purpose and the issue can even spread to the rest of your home if you're not careful. You don't want to risk health problems by allowing this to happen.

While water absorbent materials are excellent at keeping the moisture in your damp basement at bay, consider them for use on other days when water could be a problem elsewhere in your home. For example, condensation can build up on the inside of windows under certain circumstances and can run everywhere, causing potential damage. By placing specialized products to contain the runoff, you can help protect your carpets, furniture and fittings.

There will come a time when nature will throw a curveball at you and a major rainstorm will arive. Then, wind driven rain's can often infiltrate your garage, around Windows or beneath doors. This is the time to be very defensive and have products at hand that can help you keep the moisture where it should be. It's no surprise that Floridians often call these products "hurricane socks," as they help so much during those big cyclones.

You should look for polypropylene as a product of choice when you get water absorbent materials to help you. Most of the better products have this built in, as it is one of the most absorbent solutions on the market today.
